Networking Advice After 1 Year Running a Networking Group

(John Mason) #1

Hi y’all,

So CLT Devs has been around for a little over a year now (can you believe it??).

I’ve noticed a recurring theme to JR devs regarding the common advice to get out there and network, so I thought I’d write down a few thoughts on what I think efficient networking is. This is IMO and I’m no expert, so take this with a grain of salt.

The point of networking is to build a relationship with people. When a job opportunity comes up, people will always want to refer others that they know, like and trust. I repeat: the point of networking is to build relationships.

Sometimes, I get the impression that people think if they just show up to events, meet some people and shake some hands that they are doing efficient networking. WRONG. Just doing the surface level stuff doesn’t build relationships.

Here are some quick tips to build working relationships with others in Charlotte:

  • get involved
  • consistently get together with others (ie: show up to events)
  • talk (slack, forum or in person)
  • share what you’re working on / ask for feedback

Hope this is helpful.
